City Golf Qualifying Tourney starts Saturday | High schools

A field of 65 will tee off Saturday morning at Cascades as the chase begins for a coveted spot in the championship flights of the 88th Annual City Golf Tournament.

The two-round qualifying tourney starts at 7:30 a.m. Unlike in past years, groups of Men’s, Seniors and Super Seniors will be interspersed between each other instead of bunching all the Men’s open golfers into the early tee times, then Seniors and Super Seniors. All three groups will play two rounds, with the finals on Sunday.

With each defending champ back and eligible to sit out qualifying and return as the top seed, only the top 15 in the Men’s open and Seniors, and the top seven in the Super Seniors will make the championship flights.

Winners last year were Chris Williams (Men’s), Ike Martin (Seniors) and John Cantwell. Williams won his third Men’s title, Martin his second Senior’s title and Cantwell his first in Super Seniors.

The field includes plenty of familiar names.

Men’s players include three-time champ Mitch Oard, 2016 winner Jackson Cowden and finalist Nick Burris, an all-conference golfer at DePauw, Bloomington North coach Brian Muehlhaus, the Osborne brothers (Chad and Charles) and the Carmichael brothers (Jonas and Harrison).

Another tough Seniors field includes three-time winner Bob Hasty, two-time champ Gary EuDaly, Rory Brown and 2017 semifinalists Jim Alexander and Mark Chestnutwood, but doesn’t include Steve Hinds, who has appeared in the last two finals, winning in 2016 and falling to Martin last year.

The Super Seniors welcome back four-time champ George Finley after a two-year absence, along with 2016 winner/2017 runner-up Rick Miracle, two-time winner Fred Cooksey and Mike Vernon, in his 56th straight appearance in the City Tourney.

Match play rounds will begin July 7 and 8 and finish up July 14 and 15.

Regular flight qualifying

A reminder that qualifying for the regular men’s flights, women’s and junior divisions is on-going. A qualifying round must be played on the Quarry and Pine courses by July 1.

Entry fee is $15 for regular and women’s and free for juniors (18-under).
