Onalaska maintains control of MVC golf | Sports

There’s nothing ambiguous so far about the Mississippi Valley Conference girls golf race.

Onalaska is the best team in the conference, and Tomah is the second-best.

The third MVC meet of the season went true to form Monday as Onalaska outdistanced Tomah by 16 strokes at Sparta’s River Run Golf Course.

While the team standings were no surprise, there was a shakeup in the Tomah hierarchy. Madeline Adler enjoyed her best afternoon as a THS golfer by finishing fourth in the 33-golfer field with a nine-hole score of 47. She fired a consistent round with nothing but fours, fives and sixes.

Teammate Abby Sherwood was also among the leaders. She tied for fifth with a 48.

Rounding out Tomah’s varsity scores were Sarah Peterson (53), Josie Mathison (54), Jayda Zhu (56) and Sophie Pokela (58).

Annie Balduzzi of La Crosse Aquinas was the meet medalist with a four-over-par 40. She was followed by the Onalaska pair of Amber Nyugen (41) and Alyssa Achenreiner (46).

Team scores: Onalaska 186, Tomah 202, Aquinas 230, Sparta 240, Holmen 241, La Crosse Logan/La Crosse 269.

The Timberwolves also fielded a complete junior varsity team and were led by Amelia Schanhofer, who shot a 48. Amanda Lowery and Allie Kemp both shot a 56, followed by Hope Carlson (59), Hannah Zhu (64) and Emma Van Treese (64).

Tomah’s best chance to catch Onalaska comes Friday, Sept. 14, when the Timberwolves host the fourth MVC match of the season at Hiawatha Golf Club starting at 1:30 p.m.
