The course also was ranked 32 overall in the nation
Rainmakers Resort and Club in Alto, north of Ruidoso in Lincoln County, recently was named the “Top Residential Golf Course” in New Mexico for 2019 by Golfweek Magazine in its November issue.
Rainmakers also was ranked #32 overall (tied) in the nation in the “Best Residential Golf Course” category. About 16,000 golf courses operate in the United States, which represents 45 percent of the total courses in the world, according to Golfweek. By way of comparison to the neighboring state of Texas, only one course outranked Rainmakers in Texas and that was Tiger Wood’s extravagant Bluejack National Golf Course in Montgomery.
In addition to Golfweek’s stellar reputation of chronicling the golfing world, one thing that adds to the prestige of this award is the concerted effort that Golfweek staff put into their rating system. They establish very exacting criteria and have 675 highly-trained and certified raters who must comply with a strict Code of Conduct. Golfweek requires multiple unbiased ratings for each course and the raters must be meticulous in their rating reports.
Bill Vaughan, who purchased the course on Dec.31, 2017, stated “This is such a tremendous honor for everyone associated with Rainmakers, employees and members alike, and it is also a testament to the hard work, vision and ongoing investment of our golf management and maintenance teams which are best in class. And we’re not close to being through, there are so many exciting projects and plans on the horizon for Rainmakers.”
Vaughan is a Dallas/Fort Worth businessman, who was born in Hobbs. His father was in the oil and gas business and their family moved often throughout Texas and Kansas when he was a child, but one of the constants in his life was returning to Ruidoso for much-anticipated family vacations.
“I love southeastern New Mexico and believe in it and see great potential for raising the bar in terms of expectations for a resort-type lifestyle here,” he said. “We want our neighboring golf courses to share in these accolades and we are hopeful that this award will play some role in heightening national awareness on all of Lincoln County as a golfing destination.”
